TREATABLE CONDITIONS

HEADACHES & MIGRANES

If you suffer from headaches or migraines, you are not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 20.0% of women and 9.7% of men over the age of 18 had a severe headache or migraine in the past 3 months. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports headache disorders as among the most common disorders of the nervous system estimating that almost half of the adult population have had a headache at least once within the last year. Headaches and migraines can be disabling. Whether you are experiencing tension headaches, cluster headaches, sinus headaches or severe migraines, headaches take valuable time from your work and family life.

Reaching for over the counter or prescription medications can give you relief and help you get out of pain fast. This is fine for the short run but unfortunately when used over long periods of time these same medications can cause unwanted side effects. Furthermore, most common headache medications do not address the “root” cause(s) of your headaches.  With the “root” cause(s) not addressed your headaches are likely to return.

Acupuncture offers a safe and effective approach to relieving headache pain, without causing harmful side effects.  It is a holistic practice meaning that it will examine all aspects of your health and wellness so as to better address the “root” cause(s) of your headaches.

In the World Health Organization’s (WHO) landmark study “Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials” made the following statement with regards to acupuncture and the treatment of headaches and migraines:

“The use of acupuncture for treating chronic pain of the head and face has been studied extensively.  For tension headache, migraine, and other kinds of headache due to a variety of causes, acupuncture has performed favorable in trials comparing it with standard therapy, sham acupuncture or mock transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).  The results suggest that acupuncture could play a significant role in treating such conditions.”

At Eastern Shore Acupuncture we see people experiencing debilitating headaches and migraines experience dramatic positive results with acupuncture nearly daily.  If you have further questions, or would like to discuss your headaches with our acupuncturist, please feel free to call or email for an initial consultation.
